The Sultanate of Brunei, situated on the north west coast of Borneo, is one of the richest contries in the world. Why? Both onshore and offshore, hidden beneath the jungle and the surface of the South China Sea, lie huge reserves of oil. The petroleum industry has driven forward the economic development of the country, but has left in its wake a landscape dotted with 'nodding donkeys', drilling platforms and flares.

In 2001, recreational divers from the Panaga and Garrison clubs in Kuala Belait, led by Steve Holyoak and supported by Steve Oakley from the Tropical Research and Conservation Centre, proposed a platform biodiversity research project - an attempt to survey the incredible marine ecosystems found beneath the offshore platforms, which up until then had been largely unexplored.

These platforms support huge amounts of life. The underwater structures are covered in black corals and sponges, huge schools of juvenile fish seek shelter amongst the bracings and conductors, pelagic species such as trevallies and barracuda hover at the edges and even Hawksbill turtles come in to feed

Scubazoo were contracted by the Panaga Club to produce a short documentary both to illustrate the biodiversity project itself, and to educate divers and non-divers alike about the complexity and beauty of the platform ecosystems. Written, directed, filmed and edited by Roger Munns and Matthew Oldfield, the film will be completed by August 2004 and distributed to Brunei Shell Petroleum management and conservation groups.

With decomissioning of offshore platforms becoming more and more relevant, it is hoped that this documentary will provide an objective look at these beautiful ecosystems, hidden beneath the oil rigs of Brunei.
