Currently under development, ‘The Last Beach’ documents the plight of the endangered pacific leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). Leatherbacks are the largest turtle in the world and like all the marine turtles, they’re listed on the CITES list of endangered species.

Leatherbacks in particular are now extremely rare, with estimates putting the global population of these turtles as low as 2000 individuals. It is obvious that these prehistoric creatures now face an uncertain future and we hope to document their lifecycle in the greatest detail yet, before they disappear completely.

With this production in mind, Simon Christopher went on a filming recce in 2000 to check out these amazing beasts. See some of the pictures from this trip below.
